My Musical Profile: Belleruche

The wonderful Belleruche will be releasing a new single on 26th March, it’s called ‘Stormbird’ and it’s a lovely listen. The band also play a show at London’s Scala on May 22nd and play as part of the Soundwave Croatia line-up in July. I look forward to catching them at the festival. DJ Modest from the band was kind enough to answer a musical profile for me.

Listen to Stormbird:

My Favorite band/artist:

Damn that’s hard… if I had to pick one set of albums from my collection and consign the rest to the wilds I’d probably go for Lightning Hopkins… or Buck 65, can I have 2 please…

 My Favorite album:

Beastie Boys – Pauls Boutique. That album invented music production for me. Full stop.

My Favorite song:

F**k me this is difficult, I’ve just spent about 40mins on the last two questions. So I’ve just walked over the records and picked one – Mos Def & Talib Kweli – ‘Definition’

My Favorite gig:

Sons & Daughters, ICA, 2005. I had no idea who they were, or what they did, and was only there because I knew the support band. Then they absolutely floored me, I think it was their first show in London too.

My Favorite lyric:

Has to be Buck 65:

I once knew a women who was clever and tough
Who said too much make up was never enough
Her eyelids were heavy with words and desire
She lives underwater with the birds and the fire
It just so happens I’m selling my psyche
If you like love you’ll love this, most likely

My Favorite new band/artist:

I like what Breton are doing, and a lot of the weirder stuff on Static Caravan records like The Dark Sky Singers, and Lux Harmonium… also like Pulled Apart By Horses new single… we’re pretty varied in our tastes in the band…

My Dream festival line-up:

Sons & Daughters, Public Enemy, Buck 65, Lightning Hopkins, The White Stripes, Johnny Cash and Marc Bolan, but it would have to be in somewhere like Plastic People in London. Small and underground with a great soundsystem.

Right now I love:

Peanut butter toast and a Box of Dub compilation from Soul Jazz Records.

My Musical Profile: BOY

I first wrote about BOY back in November of last year. I feel in love with their song ‘Little Numbers’, which is catchy, summery and all round great. It’s also got a beautifully shot video. The album ‘Mutual Friends’ is being released in the UK on April 12th and they are releasing an EP of acoustic sessions at the end of this month. For now though, you can grab a free download of ‘This is the Beginning’ below. The band kindly filled out a musical profile for me, and we have incredibly similar taste in music!

My Favorite band/artist: It’s so hard to choose just one!! You’ll find many of them in my dream festival line up.

My Favorite album: Bon Iver by Bon Iver is the one I´ve been listening to the most lately

My Favorite song: at the moment: Rebellion (Lies) by Arcade Fire

My Favorite gig: I once saw Feist at a pretty small festival in Germany, about six years ago. Her band somehow didn’t make it so she went on stage all by herself and played the most amazing and impressive show.

My Favorite lyric: “People are just people. (…) People are just people like you.” (Regina Spektor)

My Favorite new band/artist: Jack Beauregard, especially this song:

My Dream festival line-up: Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, Phoenix, Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake, Suzanne Vega, Tom Waits, Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Cat Power, Feist, Rickie Lee Jones, The Broken Social Scene, Camille

My Right now I love: The flowers I bought for my apartment because I’ll be at home for longer than a week!

My Musical Profile: Straylings

London based band Straylings have an really great sound. It’s raw, organic and very vintage. They would have fitted in nicely back in 1969. The songs are wonderfully catchy with twang’s of American country music and psychedelic rock. I thought it would be great to see what sort of music they were inspired by, having such a unique sound and so they kindly filled in a Musical Profile for me. First, listen to this song ‘Carver’s Kicks’.

My Favorite band/artist: A few big ones for us would be… Kate Bush, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Sixto Rodriguez

My Favorite album: Some that we keep coming back to are…Forever Changes – Love, Lust For Life – Iggy Pop, Bryter Layter – Nick Drake, Townes Van Zandt – Townes Van Zandt
My Favorite song: Some random faves…Free Money – Patti Smith, Wild Is The Wind – David Bowie, Psycho Killer – Talking Heads, Who Knows Where The Time Goes – Fairport Convention

My Favorite gig: Neil Young at Hyde Park

My Musical Profile: The Wilderness of Manitoba

Canadian band The Wilderness of Manitoba create beautifully polished folk songs, and have been receiving a lot of praise for the UK shows they have just played. My Favorite song: right now: Feist – Graveyard, all time: Bob Dylan – Don’t Think Twice

My Favorite gig: Playing the End of the Road Festival

I have no place I’m calling you to go.

I’m just whispering to myself so I can pretend that I don’t know,

Mama, you are on my mind.

(Bob Dylan, Mama, you’ve been on my mind)

My Favorite new band/artist: Other Lives

My Dream festival line-up: Fleet Foxes, Panda Bear, Joanna Newsom, Jeff Mangum, Beach House.

My Musical Profile: Colossal Gospel

A few weeks ago I mentioned a band called Colossal Gospel. I was really impressed with their debut album ‘Circles’ which you can listen to on Bandcamp. Chris from the band was very kind and agreed to fill in a Musical Profile for me, so have a read and a listen too!

My Favorite band/artist: Yikes! Its so hard to pick a favorite! I guess I would have to pick Joanna Newsom because I love all of her albums!

My Favorite album: Pet Sounds

My Favorite song: “Ashes” – Rufus Wainwright

My Favorite gig: I saw this band mewithoutYou when I was like 15 or 16 in a mechanic’s car garage. During a vocal break, the singer walked up these stairs and when his part came he theatrically strolled down the stairs yelling his lines. It was awesome and captivating.

My Favorite lyric: “and I could say ooooo ooooo ooooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo, as if everbody knows what I’m talking about” – Paul Simon

My Favorite new band/artist: The Weeknd

My Dream festival line-up: The Beach Boys (or Brian Wilson), Animal Collective, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Nirvana, The Clash, The Flaming Lips, Paul Simon, Lauryn Hill, Feist, Boys II Men, Neil Young, and Arcade Fire. All for free! Who’s with me? I wish this could happen for real! Oops, I’ve done made myself excited.

My Right now I love: My piano. I make sure to tell it how much I love it every day!

My Musical Profile: Shura

Doing lots of these at the moment which is really nice! This ones with the remarkable Shura who I have more than fallen a little bit in love with since seeing her play at Soundwave Festival in Croatia. She describes her sound as ‘Night Folk’ and the result sounds like it comes from a number of different influences so I thought it would be really interesting to see what her musical taste was like. Enjoy!

My Favorite band/artist: Way too tough a call… I suppose Portishead had the biggest effect on me. I don’t think I’ll ever react on first listen to an album the way I did to Dummy. Vocally Beth Gibbons is second to none. At the moment I have some mad love for Submotion Orchestra. I have been lucky enough to share a bill with them twice, which both times, involved me geeking out to those bass lines, which absolutely come alive in their live set. They are an incredible bunch of musicians and lovely people – it’s always nice when bands are lovely too, right?

My Favorite album: Donuts – J Dilla. I was pretty late on the J Dilla bandwagon and I’m not ashamed to admit him. I discovered him this year and that album is my default choice when I feel spoilt for choice with my ipod. If I’m whipping up something in the kitchen with my twin brother or waiting at a bus stop in the rain, I know it’ll make me feel good. Having said that, if I’m waiting at a bus stop in the rain, I’ll probably be listening to Burial’s Untrue. That album belongs in the rain.
My Favorite song: Flip. So hard to pick. I’m going to pretend you said ‘song[s]’. ‘Why Don’t You Do Right?’ made famous by Jessica Rabbit has to be up there. ‘Fever’ by Peggy Lee – the drums in that track should be a lesson to every percussionist – that less is most definitely more. But, If I had to pick one track that I’d be happy to have on repeat for the rest of my life, it’d have to be… ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’. Christmas wouldn’t be the same without Frank.

My Favorite gig: Camille [the French one] – KOKO. Hands down. No questions asked. What that woman does with her voice is insane. She is completely unashamed and that makes for an incredible performer. She made everyone in that audience laugh and cry. Pâle Septembre has to be one of my favourite tracks and I was reduced to tears. A woman behind me who had been dragged their unwillingly by her boyfriend who was clearly a fan, turned round and thanked him for forcing her to come on the strength of that one performance. She also came on for the encore in a dress with the bum cut out. BIG Respect.

My Favorite lyric: I think Laura Marling is one of the finest lyricists going. I think that’s why I’ll keep going back to listen. I haven’t managed to get round to her latest effort. But to be honest a part of me is holding back because once I’ve listened to it I know I’ll have to wait another big chunk for the next batch. So I’m saving A Creature I Don’t Know for a rainy day. Laura Marling aside no matter how many time’s I listen to Morrissey’s Alsation Cousin these lyrics never fail to uproot me:

‘Were you and he Lovers ?
And if you were, then say that you were!’My Favorite new band/artist: I’m getting lost in Soundcloud at the moment. Listening to a lot of really excellent Producers. Sorrow, Ghostek, Inofaith, Eleven8 – some of which are releasing on a new Label called Solace, which looks as if it’ll be bringing some pretty excellent (semi)undiscovered talent to the table. Labelmates SOLARSTATE are also ones to watch.

My Dream festival line-up:
Me. Headlining. With Tina Turner.
I’m kidding. In all seriousness I think Soundwave Croatia have pretty much ticked all the boxes for my Dream Festival Line Up. I’d love to see Fat Freddy’s Drop on the bill. Flying Lotus. I’d defs want to hire a time machine to magic up an authentic 80s Madge. Sorted.Right now I love: Aubergines. I’m not kidding. I think I’ve eaten them every day this week.

Check out this new track from Shura, which you can grab as a free download on Soundcloud. And get down to her single launch, this Saturday the 24th at Cargo in Shoreditch.
