New Treat #122: Alexander Wolfe

Sometimes, things can have the best reviews but still slip under the radar for everyone except the critics. This seems to have happened with Alexander Wolfe whose debut album was described as ‘the most beautiful record I’ve heard in years’ by the New York Times and ‘Bon Iver ain’t got nothing on this guy’ by Huey Morgan. When you listen to his music ‘beautiful’ certainly does come to mind. His songs are heartbreaking and drenched in emotion ringing echoes of Nick Drake and Matthew and the Atlas. The arrangements are stunning, and the songs are very well written. The first album ‘Morning Brings a Flood’ is made up of a mixture of country songs with thick instrumentation and then soft folk ballads, which are sparse, haunting and his voice is rich and calm.

His second record ‘Skeletons’ will be released on September 10th on Dharma records. You can listen to the entirety of the first album here. He also plays the following London dates in September.

2nd- Communion at Notting Hill Arts Club

18th- Ronnie Scotts

20th- Old Queens Head
