New Treat #60: Austen George

It’s very early days for Austen George. With only a few hazy recordings around the internet and apparently no Facebook page, its difficult to see how someone so talented has not already gathered more attention. When you hear Austen’s voice, the first thing that comes to mind is Neil Young. Not a bad place to start for comparisons. The music he writes is also clearly influenced by Mr Young and American country/folk in general. It’s his songwriting that gets me most. ‘Catch You In The Morning’ is an extraordinary folk ballad with inserts of blues guitar and Austen’s unique guitar style.

Born and raised in Edinburgh, he began songwriting age 14 before qualifying as a stain glass artist. He now commits himself fully to music, playing around Edinburgh and currently recording an EP. I think if he does it right, he could have a bright future ahead of him. Listen below to ‘Catch You in the Morning’ and see the video of him performing 6 songs at a gig in Edinburgh. You can listen to more on his SoundCloud.

  1. I saw Austen play at the Fence Collectives Homegame in Anstruther this year. He performed in the Lone Pigeons Space Cave. A stunning performance.
