New Treat #58: Ren Harvieu

Ren Harvieu sounds like she comes from a different time. She combines her effortlessly silky jazz vocals with Carole King’s songwriting sensibility and the results are delightful. Ren is from Lancashire and was brought up on the likes of Stevie Wonder and John Cooper Clarke, but it was her introduction to Alicia Keys which showed Ren her voice.

‘Through the Night’ is a big time ballad with a catchy chorus and the arrangements are stunning. Where as ‘Forever in Blue’ is darker and with more jazz influence. It will be interesting to see whether she goes down a more pop route or not.

Her first single, ‘Through the Night’ (see video below), is released on January 16th and she will be playing her first ever headline London show at Monto Water Rats on November 24th. I think a slot in BBC’s Sound of 2012 is not unlikely.
