New Treat #40: Michael Kiwanuka

A few weeks ago I went along to the Marcus Foster EP Launch at Hoxton Bar and Grill, which was a Communion organized night. Also on the bill was the wonderful Nathaniel Rateliff, Bear’s Den and someone who I had never heard of, Michael Kiwanuka. Since then I have slowly fallen in love with his music. It is incredibly unique, mixing soul, folk, blues and rock to create something quite unlike anyone on the Communion label and unlike anyone making music at the moment. He claims he is inspired by Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix and I also hear a lot of Stevie Wonder in his music.

His first EP, ‘Tell Me A Tale’ is available to download on iTunes and its a wonderful listen, particularly the title track which also has a great 70’s inspired video. I am really looking forward to hearing more from this young chap, he could have some great things coming.
