I’ve always thought Pete Roe was one of the hidden treasures of the British folk scene. He has supported both Laura Marling and Mumford and Sons on past tours and has been a signature part of Laura Marling’s live band for years. He is an incredibly talented musician, playing a mixture of piano, guitar banjo and singing for Laura but what a lot of people don’t know is that he is an incredibly talented songwriter in his own right. His new EP ‘The Merry-Go-Round’ I hope, will get some of this better noticed.
The first track ‘Bellina’ appeared on the Communion Record which I reviewed earlier this year. The song is a wonderful introduction to Pete’s music, encompassing the storytelling in his lyrics with his gentle voice and some intricate guitar playing. ‘Oh Susannah’ has some stunning melodies while Pete Roe sings of lost love in the sweetest way. ‘Underneath the Apple Tree’ is my favourite and has the most Mumford feel to it with the catchy chorus and it also has a wonderful summer vibe to it. The final track ‘The Merry-Go-Round’ is a beautifully simple song which sees whispery vocals end this stunning EP.
The whole EP is simple guitar and vocals and was all recorded live. This EP is a really beautiful and gentle start to what I hope will be a brilliant career for Pete Roe. It’s about time he got into the limelight and this EP shows he totally deserves it.
Best Tracks: Bellina and Underneath the Appletree
The EP is released on Communion Records on June 7th and Pete will be heading on a UK tour next week. The dates are as follows;
9th Birmingham Glee Club
10th Manchester Trinity Church
11th Nottingham Red Rooms
13th Bristol Louisiana
14th Edinburgh Sneaky Pete’s
15th Glasgow Nice n Sleazy’s
16th London Luminaire
Hope some of you can make it down to the shows; I would be there if it wasn’t for an exam the day after the Manchester date. The packaging on the EP (at least the promo’s) is also beautiful, the best I’ve ever seen for an EP.
This is a video of Pete when I saw him support Mumford and Sons last year. There isn’t many of him on YouTube and all are of this song, Devil’s Dancefloor which is from a past EP called ‘Animals’ (also very good!).
