There are some pretty good cover songs out their. The more obvious ones, such as Jimi Hendrix’s All Along the Watchtower, Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah, Johnny Cash’s Hurt and more recently, the success of Florence and the Machine’s You’ve Got the Love. But their are also a lot of cover songs which not a lot of people will hear and this post is my favourite of those. I’ve probaly missed some of the best ones I’ve heard out, but these are the ones that come to mind.
If people hadn’t realised before, to download the mp3’s you click on the file and download from the page that come up (not right click). I’m not sure if the Johnny Flynn one works, let me know if it doesn’t. Enjoy listening 🙂
5. Alessi’s Ark- Simple Man (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Alessi makes this song so beautiful. She doesn’t add anything extra to it, its just simple, I like that.
4. The XX- You’ve Got The Love (Florence and the Machine Cover)
I don’t know if this properly qualifies for the list as maybe its a remix not a cover? I’m not sure, its a remix/cover. A brilliant version of a song which Florence made her own, but is too a cover. I like what the XX have done with it. The harp and then the vibraphone sounds above the dubstep sound of the XX is quite special.
3. Johnny Flynn and the Sussex Wit- Rocky Raccoon (The Beatles)
I love this, its like comedy/folk but its really good at the same time. This is a sounds like a quite hard song to cover, simply as its a bit weird but Johnny and the Sussex Wit really made it their own.
2. Mumford and Sons- I’m Not Alone (Calvin Harris cover)
Its wonderful when bands do covers of songs nothing like there own sound, and make them sound there own. Mumford and Sons turned this pretty bad song into something pretty good. Listen to there Golden Slumbers/Carry Your Weight (The Beatles) cover too. It’s pretty stunning, its on The Hype Machine.
1. Regina Spektor- Real Love (John Lennon Cover)
One of the greatest songs ever written? It is to me, and this cover does the John Lennon version justice. It’s just so pretty!
This was really hard! So many good covers to choose from. I think some special mentions should go to Florence and the Machines cover of Beirut’s Postcard’s From Italy, Bon Iver’s cover of Feist’s The Park and Blue Roses’ cover of Golden Slumbers.
